Ao Nang or Ao Phra Nang, features Krabi's most developed beach. Fringed by palms, the long beach is backed by a wide range of accommodation including resorts, bungalows and guesthouses. Most travel services can be found here, and there is a good variety of restaurants featuring both local and international cuisine. Due to it's locale and range of services and accommodation, Ao Nang serves as the ideal place to both stay put and relax, or from which to explore surrounding islands and beaches.
Krabi province has some of Thailand's most breathtaking scenery, with stunning beaches, limestone cliffs and colourful coral reefs. Ao Nang with a good choice of restaurants and hotels is Krabi's most popular beach. Ao Nang also provides a embarkation point for beautiful Railey Beach - accessible only by boat. Many of the more upscale hotels are located on developing Klong Muang and nearby Tubkaak - a very quiet beach area - providing a perfect holiday retreat. Ko Lanta and the Phi Phi Islands are part of Krabi province and both lie within a designated marine national park.
General Information
This seaside province is located in the Andaman Sea. The province is full of white sandy beaches, crystal clear seawater, beautiful islands, verdant forest with caves, and waterfalls, including more than 100 offshore islands.
Krabi is located 814 kilometres from Bangkok, covering an area of 4,708 square kilometres. From archaeological discoveries, it is believed that Krabi was one of the oldest communities in Thailand dating from the prehistoric period. It is also believed that Krabi was once the town of Ban Thai Samo, one of 12 royal cities that used a monkey as the town symbol. Krabi was a dependency town of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Kingdom. Another legend indicates that the town may have taken its name after the meaning of Krabi, which means sword. This may have stemmed from a legend that says an ancient sword was unearthed prior to the city’s founding. Later, the sword became a symbol of Krabi.
